Au XIXe siècle, les communautés religieuses catholique et protestante se sont reconstruites et développées en cherchant à affirmer leur identité et leur visibilité dans l’espace public de la ville la plus peuplée du département, à travers notamment la construction de nouveaux édifices du culte ou l’ouverture d’écoles.
Mais les forces irréligieuses se sont progressivement rebellées contre cette emprise de la religion dans la vie publique et un fort vent d’anticléricalisme a soufflé sur la ville sous la Troisième République.

Throughout the 19th century, as Rochefort had become the largest town in the département as far as population was concerned, the Catholic and Protestant communities found various ways of asserting an expanding role and identity within the social framework by building new places of worship or creating schools.
However, this development of religious influence in public life gradually aroused strong reactions by agnostic groups, which led to an anti-religion climax under the Third Republic régime.
